Welcome to Calcutta Backpackers: Our Story, Mission & Hostel Guidelines

1. How We Started: The Story Behind Calcutta Backpackers

Calcutta Backpackers was born out of a shared passion for real, slow-paced travel. Having spent years hosteling across different parts of the world, we realized that traditional tourist pockets often miss the quiet magic of daily local life.

We wanted to create a space in South Kolkata—nestled right between the vibrant street markets of Behala and the green, café-filled avenues of New Alipore—that feels less like a sterile hotel and more like a warm, shared home. We opened our doors to build a community hub for curious, open-minded travelers seeking genuine connections over commercialized tourist traps.

2. Our Mission: What We Aim to Deliver

We design every part of your stay around three core values:

  • Community First: We aren't just selling a bed; we’re creating a space for stories, spontaneous evening addas (chats over chai), group meals, and shared adventures around the city.
  • Authentic Local Insight: We love showing you Kolkata beyond the guidebook. From secret street food stalls to efficient metro hacks, our team is always here to share non-touristy local tips.
  • A Safe & Restful Sanctuary: Travel can be exhausting. We aim to provide a clean, secure, and peaceful atmosphere where you can get a great night’s sleep after exploring the city.

3. Setting Expectations & House Guidelines

To keep Calcutta Backpackers comfortable, safe, and respectful for everyone, we ask all guests to follow a few simple house guidelines:

Respect Quiet Hours

  • Quiet Time (11:00 PM – 7:00 AM): To ensure everyone gets proper rest, keep noise levels low in common areas and dorm rooms during these hours.

Keep Shared Spaces Clean

  • Dorms & Bathrooms: Please keep your personal belongings neatly organized in your allocated space or in the safety deposit or bed spaces. Always clean up after yourself in shared washrooms and common rooms.
  • Common Kitchen & Dining: Wash and wipe any dishes, utensils, or mugs immediately after use so the next traveler can use them.

Safety & Security

  • Lockers & Valuables: Keep your valuables secured in your personal locker.
  • Visitors Policy: For the security of all staying guests, outside visitors are welcomed in common area reception zones during daylight hours, but are not permitted inside dorm rooms or private accommodation wings.

A Culture of Mutual Respect

  • We hold zero tolerance for discrimination, harassment, or disrespectful behavior toward fellow guests or staff. Treat everyone with kindness, respect personal space, and help us maintain an inclusive environment.

4. How to Get the Most Out of Your Stay

  • Ask Us Anything: Need help setting up local transit apps like Yatri Sathi, booking a train ticket, or finding a quiet cafe with fast Wi-Fi in New Alipore? Just come talk to us at the front desk!
  • Join the Common Area: Grab a seat, pour a cup of tea, and say hello to the person next to you. The best travel memories often start with a simple conversation in the hostel common room.

Welcome to the family—we’re thrilled to have you here!
